A counterculture is a subculture which typically rejects and contradicts the values which shape the mainstream society. This kind of movements usually reflect the aspirations of speficic generation and human group during a certain era.

The counterculture that proliferated during the 1960s in the US, was usually associated with the hippy subculture and it rejected the traditional way of life, the so-called 'American Dream' and the establishment.

In that moment, the US society wanted the end of the participation in the Vietnam war. This is why the counterculture movement praised for peace and performed many demonstrations claiming for the end of the conflict, for pacifism and for saving human lives.
