In American society, romantic love is considered the main reason for people to marry. On the other hand, in some societies, roma

ntic love is considered a form of obsession or madness. In fact, even in many societies where "true love" is not considered a form of insanity, arranged marriages are still the norm. For example, in many cultures it's believed that marriage is basically an economic arrangement. Thus, a farmer needs a wife both to bear children and to share the farm work while raising new "hands" as additional farm labor. In other societies, marriage is mainly about cementing connections between families. Indeed, most marriages between members of European royal or aristocratic lineages were primarily aimed at creating trust, loyalty, and mutual obligations between privileged and powerful families. The main idea of this paragraph is that there are different definitions of the word love. It can be forced like in a Midsummer Night's Dream (although it didn't happen in the story it almost did), or it can be a strong passion for someone (Romeo and Juliet great example), and when the paragraph says connecting families, one example would be a king of England's (forgot which one) daughter married a distant relative.

What was the Transcendentalists' general attitude toward problems in society, such as slavery?
Debora [2.8K]
Transcendentalism was a philosophical movement that held its ground in America for a good half a century. As the believers of this movement were against organised religion and believed that knowledge can be gained with the power of contemplating about the spirit and soul. The transcendentalists were against all kinds of social evils and unjust attitudes that prevailed in the American society at that time. Similarly the problem of slavery and woman emancipation for example greatly irked them. Because transcendentalism found its place only in literature and became a literary movement, the followers of this movement could not really solve the problems but they did voice them in their work, hoping it will open people's eyes.
