How does the system of checks and balances strengthen democracy in the United States?
Feliz [49]
Each branch of government controls a certain aspect of the other.

Legislative can restrict the policies of the executive and judicial.

Judicial can strike down legislation deemed unconstitutional, and undo executive decisions through rulings on their constitutionality.

Executive Orders can bypass legislative channels for more efficient decision making, and can nominate if not alter the Supreme Court along with taking part in it's processes. ( Some of this is my own interpretation. )

Take up the White Man's burden-
Maslowich

D. Your new-caught, sullen peoples, / Half-devil and half-child.

Explanation:

  • Poem was written in 1899, at a time when Philippines  were fighting for independence from the United States of America.
  • Kipling clearly liked the idea of enslaving the people of one Asian country on the other side of the world. The White Man's Burden was written with the sole intention of persuading Americans not to give freedom to the Philippines.
  • Poem is, by modern standards, extremely offensive. The author calls the population of another race your new-caught, sullen peoples / Half-devil and half-child.
  • He criticizes them for not accepting white people as better than themselves and those who brought them to the light of day by colonization.

How did workers respond to big business?
navik [9.2K]
They began to protest but in the workforce is known as strike. Others also were journalists who were known as muckrakers such as Ida B. Tarbell who responded to the big business of standardized oil and how that company was a monopoly. Because of the unjust way Rockefeller’s standard oil company got money there were laws passed to prevent this such as the Sherman-Anti Trust Act. Hope this helped!
