Since the soldier is a Federal scout, it is likely that he is scouting ahead where the military will be eventually be traveling. This makes it like that the military is heading in the direction of Farquhar and his wife. Most likely this will result in some type of altercation between the two men. There is no indication that Farquhar will walk into a trap. Also, this exchange is meaningless to put in the story if they simply forget the soldier. We also don't see any indication that the soldier is to be pursued.
