The M checkpoint is one of the controls of the cell cycle, and the one that determines if cell division has occurred properly. During the M checkpoint the cell checks if the sister chromatids are properly attached to the spindle microtubes at the centromere. This characteristic is an indicative that cell division took place without any major errors and that the cell cycle can continue.
