This phrase refers to the coming of age of the depression babies, those born during the 1930's during the Great Depression. As they became teenagers in the mid- to late-1940's they were able to take advantage of the postwar booming economy. These teens were able to get jobs, make money, and ultimately become consumers of the new products available.
