The Central Powers and the Allied Powers were the two coalitions that fought during World War I. This was a conflict that lasted from July 1914 to November 1918. The war was one of the largest and deadliest conflicts in history. Although it was referred to as "the war to end all wars," it was a direct catalyst for WWII about twenty years later.
