so he is actually buying 8 hats and 12 scarves.

a hat costs 8.50 and a scarf costs 5.50

so you put it into a equation

8.50(h)+5.50(s) = P     h = hat, s = scarf, P = pay

8.50(8)+5.50(12) = P

68 + 66 = P

P = 134
