Spain started exploring the "New World" as a result of their search for gold and silver. It's obvious they had no gold and silver in their home country.
As the New World was discovered, valuable agricultural products and mineral resources were brought into Spain. Some of these products had lasting impact in the Spanish economy. Some of the plants and animals discovered in the New World were unknown to Spain.
