Original jurisdiction of a court is the power to hear a case for the first time, It has the exclusive right to hear all cases that deal with disputes between states, or between states and the union government. It also has original jurisdiction over cases brought to the court by ordinary people regarding issues to the importance of society at large. In common law legal systems, original jurisdiction refers to the right of the Supreme court to hear a case for the first time, as opposed to appellate jurisdiction, when a higher court has the power to review a lower court's decision.

In the United States, courts having original jurisdiction are referred to as trial courts. In certain types of cases, the U.S. Supreme Court has original jurisdiction concurrently with lower courts. Whereas in India, the Supreme Court has original, appellate and advisory jurisdiction. The Supreme Court has special advisory jurisdiction in matters which may specifically referred by the President of India under Article 143 of the Indian Constitution.

The original Jurisdiction refers to the court’s Authority to hear a case for the first time. If a case has come to the court and has no legal background, then it will fall under original jurisdiction.

<u>Original Jurisdiction – The courts have original jurisdiction over all the cases that require ‘Federal Law’.</u> These courts can also exercise their powers to the cases which have diversity jurisdiction. Diversity jurisdiction takes place only when both the parties belong to two different states.<u> The courts which are included under original Jurisdiction are – State Trail courts, Traffic courts, Family courts, Juvenile Courts, Tax Courts and other courts related to Supreme Court of United States</u>.It never takes up any new case. All the cases that come to Supreme Court for hearing and further verdict come from lower courts. President of United States of America gets to appoint the chief justice of Supreme Court and 8 assistant judges. In Simple Words, the term Original Jurisdiction refers to the question that which court has the authority to hear a legal case for the first time. <u>For Example a Family Court will be hearing the case related to Divorces or Child Custody but it cannot hear cases related to tax</u>. Courts of original jurisdiction include state, District courts. The Supreme Court acts as an appellate court. Despite being biggest court of the country, Supreme Court can’t hear any case which is presented in front of court for the first time.
