Answer:

C. Chance can play a big part in people's fates.

D. Civilized justice does not mix well with barbarism.

Explanation:

The short story of "The Lady or the Tiger" by Frank Stockton revolves around the unfair "trial" of a courtier who fell in love with the princess. Deemed illegal in the kingdom for a princess to be in love with someone from the 'lower' rank, the King decided on a 'justified' trial to prove the case of the relationship.

The trial consists of the accused man provided with an option of choosing either of two doors, which will lead to a beautiful lady who will become his wife or a tiger, who will eat him up. Either way, he and the princess cannot be together. We are told that the princess who must have been privy to the doors and who they lead to, indicated to her lover to chose the door on the right. The end of the story did not specify who was behind the door, the lady or the tiger.

Though there are major themes of love, trust, justice etc, two major themes of the story can be said to be that -

1. People's fates are majorly dependent on chance.

2. Barbarism, which is the setting of the story (semi-barbaric), does not go well with a civilized justice.
