All of Thurber's family members had strange habits and fears. Old Aunt Melissa Beall  is afraid that she will die on South High Street. Briggs Beall  is afraid of suffocating during the night and dying in his sleep. Aunt Sarah Shoaf  believed that someone would blow chloroform into the room. As it is used in the text, "America" is symbolic for _______ in the story tears of autumn
Lyrx [107]

Answer:

America symbolizes freedom and a new life.

Explanation:

I haven't read the Tears of Autumn, but typically in any story, migrating to America means the start of a new life for people. If you've ever heard of the phrase, "The American Dream", it means that people come here for the opportunities and jobs. Japan does not have as much freedom as America, therefore it represents a chance to start again with new opportunities and freedom.
