Explanation:

Characterization is a literary device that authors use to develop fictional characters in a story, that is to say, to reveal a character's physical appearance, personality, interests, or motifs. This characterization can be either direct or indirect. When it is indirect, writers show the character's personality and traits through dialogues, thoughts, behaviors, actions and people's reaction to the character.

When the characterization is direct, on the other hand, authors directly tell readers how the character is, in other words, they make statements about the character personality or traits. The protagonist's height and a narrator's describing a character as "shrewd" are a good example as they are direct statements about a character.
