Alexander, when definitively submitting the Greek polis (in a process of conquest initiated by his father, Felipe), set out to conquer the civilizations of the Middle East, dominated by the Persians. The Persian emperor, Darius, tried to face the invaders, but even though he was outnumbered, the Persians were defeated and Darius had to flee. One by one, the Satraps of the Persian Empire fell under Alexander`s domain.
