In mathematics, a (real) interval is a set of real numbers with the property that any number that lies between two numbers in the set is also included in the set. For example, the set of all numbers x satisfying 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 is an interval which contains 0 and 1, as well as all numbers between them.

It referred to the way to reorganize the pitches of a scale so that the focal point of the scale changes. In a single key, thse mode contains the exact same pitches. In most of Western music, the modes have their roots in Church music.

The main categories of musical mode that have been part of musical notation since the medieval times includes the Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian; although some of them are major, minor or ambiguous modes.
