As you know, our town just passed a new law. Kids can no longer ride skateboards on our town’s streets and sidewalks. This is un

fair. Our town does not have a skate park, and not everyone has a driveway. This means that some of us can’t ride skateboards at all. 2You spoke about this new law last week at a town meeting. You said that riding skateboards on streets is dangerous. You are worried that kids will be hit by cars. However, we have many small side streets in our town. Cars rarely drive on these streets. It is safe to ride a skateboard on a side street in our town. 3You said that people walking on sidewalks are afraid of skateboarders. They think that skateboarders might crash into them. This is not true. My friends and I have never crashed into someone walking on a sidewalk. We slow down when we see people. We smile and say hello. 4You also said that kids riding skateboards make too much noise. You believe that the people of our town want peace and quiet and do not want to hear us clang our skateboards on curbs. But children are rarely ever quiet when they play. Kids playing in yards make noise. People driving cars honk their horns. Skateboarders are not the only people who make noise. 5You also said that riding a skateboard is dangerous and kids could fall and be seriously hurt. I wear a helmet in case I bump my head. I also wear knee and elbow pads. My friends do this, too. This will keep us from being seriously hurt if we fall. 6Please change this law, Mayor Thomson. It is unfair to the children in our town. Many of us ride skateboards to get from place to place. We also ride them for fun. We are not hurting anyone and we are careful.

Mr. Williams,

My name is Emma Stewart. I am a 9th grader attending Parkway High School. I am writing to discuss how I believe you should let students wear hoodies here at Parkway. Hoodies should be worn in school because of many reasons. For instance, we should be allowed to wear hoodies because of the cold. Some classrooms are cold and hoodies comfort us and keep our ears and neck warm. We should also be allowed to wear hoodies for the bad hair days us students have. Another reason why we should be allowed to wear hoodies is because it can help students concentrate.

Hoodies can comfort us students and keep our ears and neck warm during the day. Especially in the classrooms where teachers love the cold temperature, and in the cafeteria. Jamie Bittiger explains how not being able to wear hoodies is frustrating. She says, “Hoodies provide a feeling of comfort. They also keep us warm when sometimes the school is very cold from the wintry air.”

Wearing hoodies to school can help us students with bad hair days. Waking up too early, is already a struggle for some students. Being able to wear hoodies can boost someone’s insecurity because other students won’t make fun of the student who is just not having a good hair day.

The last reason I believe we should wear hoodies is because it can help students concentrate. Most students, including me, like to put on their hoodies because it keeps them isolated from distractions around the classroom. The hoodie blocks everything else but what you're looking at on your desk or at the board. Therefore, students can concentrate on their work.

For these reasons, I am writing to you to ask if you could please let your students at Parkway High School, wear hoodies on campus. Hoods can comfort students, keep our ears and neck warm, increase the confidence for those late birds, and can help students concentrate. Please take this into consideration for us students being able to wear hoodies to school. If you have any questions, please call me at (555) 654-8769. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Emma Stewart

Identify the choice that best describes the sentence
Ganezh [65]

Answer:

complex

Explanation:

This is a compound sentence because it contains an independent clause and a dependent clause. An independent clause is able to stand on its own and would make sense as a separate sentence. A dependent clause is awkward if left alone and, as such, needs to be included as part of a sentence.

The independent clase in this example is:

humans were interested in astronomy

The dependent clause is:

even before telescopes were invented
