The North stopped believing in slavery except for in the south. So slaves would run away to the North or any place that accepted them. Those who were caught were forced to be returned at a condition far worse then before.

Explanation:

I believe it is  A . Disease was horrid and they were carried on slave ships cramped tightly together with hardly any room to move and the stench was horrid. Some were allowed on board until some jumped off rather taking drowning then slavery. And later on throughout the years, they didn't depend on slaves because they had factories and machines.

I believe because California wanted to enter the union as a free state, free state means banning slavery. This made the southerners upset because California goes from north to south and if California were to be admitted as a free state, it would violate the Missouri Compromise, which drew the border to determine free states and slave states.
