Context clues are details that help a reader understand later parts of a passage or sentence.

Ex. The corgi, who had been rummaging in the garbage, smelled nasty.

If we are trying to find out what the word "nasty" means, the context clue in this sentence is "rummaging in the garbage". Garbage has a bad smell to it, a very unpleasant smell. Therefore nasty means unpleasant.

I hope my example helped you! ;)

The underlined words affect the meaning of the excerpt because B they convey the idea that the way trees mark the years is fascinating.

What is the excerpt about?

The excerpt is about the pear tree that Uncle Paul cuts down and how fascinating its way of marking the years is.

The underlined words reveal such a meaning, especially when Uncle Paul says the tree is "waiting to tell you its story."

Each ring in the wood represents a year that the tree has lived. Uncle Paul is fascinated by that and cannot wait to teach the children about it.
