The monks made vows to live in poverty or in other words to not seek out wealth but spiritual gain. A vow of chastity to remain pure and not tempted by other non-spiritual things. And a vow of obedience that they take because even Christ was obedient until his death but they are only to be obedient to legitimate authority.
