The first response was often to attempt to drive out the invading Western armies. The superior technology that the West employed often made these fights extremely deadly for the native people. From that point then it was more about preserving the native culture. Many nations and peoples would also slowly accept the liberal ideals that the West brought. 

The best answer for initial response is that of rebellion often by the wealthy. They had the most to lose in wealth, power, and control.
