There was no democracy under napoleon. When he came to power, the republic was abolished and despotism was practised. He crowned the emperor, he founded the first empire of France but he was respected and loved by the people. In December 1840, 900,000 parisians braved the cold to greet napoleon after his coffin was brought back to Paris. Zhang zhilian, a Chinese historian, once said: napoleon's bourgeois regime achieved war, claimed to be emperor and enjoyed interests, and could not overturn the anti-feudal significance of achievements, laws and revolution
