Protons

Explanation:

Every element had a different number of protons in their atomic structure. The number of protons distinguish one chemical element from another.

An element is a distinct substance that cannot be split up into simpler substances.

They are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.

Protons and neutrons are called nucleons and they occupy the nucleus of an  atom. The protons are positively charge and the neutrons carry no charges.

Electrons are the negatively charged particles in an atom.

Every atom is distinguished from one other by the number of protons they contain. This knowledge is the basis of the modern periodic table.

The modern periodic law states that "the properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic number which is the number of protons".
