Step-by-step explanation:

1) what * what=27

and what+what=-12

factors of 27: 9,3  -9,-3  1,27 -1,27

-9+-3=-12

hence -9 and -3 are our factors

(substitute -9 and -3 in place of -12)

x^2-9x-3x+27

split into two groups:

x^2-9x

(both have a gcf of x)

x(x-9)

and

-3x+27

(both have a gcf of "-3"

-3(x-9)

take the numbers OUTSIDE the parantheses and put them in a bracket:
