Politically: Lincoln tried preserving the Union, so the South decided to secede and this led to war.

• The most unfortunate political consequence of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln's death.

- Lincoln also issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It went into effect on January 1, 1863, and declared, "that all persons held as slaves" in states that rebelled "are, and henceforward shall be free." the proclamation changed the focus of the war

Economic consequences:

  • , the Southern economy was in ruins. Much of the war had been fought in the South
  • foreign nations that once bought Southern cotton began to produce their own. As a result, post-war cotton prices plunged dramatically
  • Just like in the South, a large percentage of Union soldiers went home with injuries that prevented them from working
  • Buildings, railroad lines, and family farms destroyed in the war needed to be rebuilt. The nation as a whole needed to be reconstructed

Social consequences:

  • The Civil War allowed African Americans to make progress in society.
  • Following the Emancipation Proclamation, many free African Americans joined the Union army
  • The population was reduced as a result of war casualties. Farms and homes had been destroyed.

How was Russia's role in the events leading to World War I different from that of Austria-Hungary?
Mazyrski [523]

Answer:

  • Austria-Hungary was responding to a direct attack against members of its royal family.  Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated by terrorists in Sarajevo, Serbia.  Austria-Hungary held Serbia responsible.
  • Russia mobilized troops in keeping with an alliance it had with Serbia, offering them protection against the threatened military action by Austria-Hungary.

More details:

Various systems of alliances were put in place before World War I.  The two main alliance systems were the Triple Entente, which had Britain, France and Russia as allies, and the Triple Alliance, which had Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy as allies.  There were also other alliances, such as Russia taking on recently independent Serbia as an ally, as both had ethnic Slavic populations.

So here's how the start of World War I happened. When the Austrian prince and his wife were assassinated in Serbia, the Austrian government threatened the nation of Serbia with retaliatory action (even though the assassination was carried out by a terrorist group, not the Serbian government). Russia responded to Austria's threat, because Russia was bound to protect its Slavic ally, Serbia. Germany responded to the mobilization of Russian troops, and when Germany declared war on Russia in 1914, they implemented a military plan (the Schlieffen Plan), which assumed war would mean they'd have to take on all members of the Triple Entente alliance.  So as soon as Germany declared war on Russia, they sent troops to go attack France.  That pulled France and Britain into the war immediately as well, and the war spread and became a global conflict.

Why did Monroe Doctorine recognize existing colonies in the Western Hemisphere
pentagon [3]

The Monroe Doctrine was introduced in 1823 and had a lot of fascinating points. Two of the major points were, Europe could not interfere with countries in the Americas and the United States could not interfere with Europe. This played a huge part in the Western Hemisphere as Presidents would always invoke the Doctrine during foreign affairs. The most recent example, President Reagan used the Monroe Doctrine to fight and stop communism in the Americas.
