The answer would be infinitely many solutions if your system is y = 2x - 5, -8x + 4y = -20. The answer would be (5/2, 0) if your system is y = 2x - 5, -8x - 4y = -20.

y = 2x - 5
-8x + 4y = -20

-8x + 4(2x - 5) = -20
-8x + 8x - 20 = -20
-20 = -20
True, so this system has infinitely many solutions.

y = 2x - 5
-8x = 4y = -20

-8x - 4(2x - 5) = -20               -8(2.5) - 4y = -20
-8x - 8x + 20 = -20                 -20 - 4y = -20
-16x + 20 = -20                    + 20         + 20
         -  20    - 20                 ------------------------
--------------------------              -4y = 0
 -16x = -40                           ------  ----
-------- --------                           4      4
 -16     -16
                                                y = 0
x = 2.5

The final solution for this system is (2.5, 0) or (5/2, 0).

The hours of daylight,y, in Utica in days, x, from January 1, 2013 can be modeled by the equation y=3.06sin(0.017x-1.40) + 12.23
defon
The month of January has 31 days, so from January 1st to February 14th, there are 31 + 14 or 45 days, namely x = 45.

y = 3.06 * sin[ 0.017(45) - 1.40 ] + 12.23.

Angle BDC is given as 38° but not drawn in the figure.  Amateurs.

We calculate angle DBC

DBC = 180° - 96° - 38°  = 180° - 134°

We won't bother subtracting because we're really after

angle ABD = 180° - DBC = 134°

Now we have a Law of Cosines situation,

AD² = AB² + BD² - 2(AB)(BD) cos ABD

AD = √( 5.8² + 27.3² - 2(5.8)(27.3) cos 134°)

AD ≈ 31.61 m

Answer: 31.6 m
