For most authors, it is from this moment that the history of the Byzantine Empire begins. The Byzantine Empire inherited the regions of Greece, Anatolia, Thrace, Macedonia, and the Middle East. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and especially under the rule of the emperor Justinian, the Byzantine Empire took an aggressive campaign of reconquest, through which it gained the regions of Northern Africa, Italy, and Southern Spain, ruling over almost the entire Mediterranean Sea. The only regions that were <u>not under Byzantine domain</u> were <u>Gaul (France) and Britain</u>.
