At birth, a baby’s brain is said to contain 100 billion neurons, a number of brain cells that can be compared to the number of stars in the Milky Way. These are almost all the neurons the brain will ever have. As the neurons mature, more and more synapses are made and as a normal part of brain development, the brain will eliminate connections that are seldom or never used. This will result in a reduction of the number of neurons.
