Why is the actual trail longer than the distance from springer mountain to mount katahdin

The distance of the Appalachian trail starting in Springer Mountain in Georgia and ending in Mount Katahdin in Maine is longer because of the difference in elevation along the way. The trail itself is said to be around 2,200 miles long where as the distance between the two locations is much less at around 1,500 miles.
