From the Spoon River Anthology and "The Story of an Hour", women at that time have a very little freedom, unlike today. It was clearly described in the story that women felt that they owned by their husband, they physically abused, they cannot move freely and they were trapped in their marriage.
Beyond his personal success, Equiano's book made a vital contribution to the abolitionist cause. His story refuted many of the racist stereotypes and misconceptions that were prominent at the time as he gave the public an opportunity to see slavery through the eyes of a former slave. The attire of Bertilak, the mysterious Green Knight who challenges the knights of the Round Table, is described in the medieval text in detail in lines 161-172, where we can read that "Bothe the bosses on his belt and other bright gems / That were richly ranged on his raiment noble". The word noble indicates indeed his social status; it grants him his high position in the court. Additionally, the fact that precious stones and metals are part of his attire also reflects the lavishness of the royalty and the court.
