The Magna Carta promised:

1. No free man shall be punished unless judged lawfully by his peers.

2. There shall be no "selling" of justice -- in other words, no bribes accepted by those in the position of judging.

3. Fines assessed against those convicted of an offense shall not be more than the person could afford to pay.
