A positive result of the British RAJ rule in India was the establishment of democracy. The RAJ was the name of the colonial system that the English created in this country from 1858 to 1947. It was Queen Victoria and her government who decided to take control of the region instead of the East India Company. This big company belonged to England and influenced most British colonies. When she seized power, the Queen continued to apply the same political process as before, like choosing from England the various governors of the Indian provinces. However, in 1919 a legislature elected by the people was created.

Further explanation

In the early years, the assembly didn’t have real power. The viceroy chosen by England still be the main decision-maker. He could decide alone to apply a law or even to not listen to something voted by the deputies. On the other hand, the Indian independence movement decided to boycott the first elections because the conditions imposed by the British for the right to vote were unfair. Of a million people entitled to vote, only 182,000 agreed to do so.

Despite difficult beginnings, democracy in India gradually grown until independence in 1947 and became the main political system since that time.
