On a particular day, the wind added 5 miles per hour to Alfonso's rate when he was cycling with the wind and subtracted 5 miles

per hour from his rate on his return trip. Alfonso found that in the same amount of time he could cycle 50 miles with the wind, he could go only 30 miles against the wind. What is his normal bicycling speed with no wind?

speed with no wind = s

speed with wind = s + 5

speed against wind = s - 5

time = t

speed = distance/time

distance = speed * time

With wind, time = t, speed = s + 5, distance = 50

50 = (s + 5)t

Against wind, time = t, speed = s - 5, distance = 30

30 = (s - 5)t

t = 30/(s - 5)

50 = (s + 5) * 30/(s - 5)

50(s - 5) = (s + 5) * 30

50s - 250 = 30s + 150

20s = 400

s = 20

Answer: 20 mph

2.5 kg of potatoes cost £1.40<br> Work out the cost of 4.25 kg of potatoes.<br> 5.95
kvasek [131]

Answer:

£2.38

Step-by-step explanation:

Write and solve an equation of ratios:

 £1.40       2.5 kg

----------- = ------------

     c          4.25 kg

Cross multiplying, we get:

(£1.40)(4.25 kg) = (2.5 kg*c), or

       (£1.40)(4.25 kg)

c = -------------------------- =  £2.38

             2.5 kg

Evaluate the function.<br> f(x) = 3x2 + 16<br> Find f(-1)
SIZIF [17.4K]

Answer:

f(-1)=19

Step-by-step explanation:

<u>Evaluating Functions</u>

Given a function y=f(x), evaluate the function for x=a means substituting the variable for the given value.

We have the function:

f(x)=3x^2+16

Find f(-1):

f(-1)=3(-1)^2+16

f(-1)=3(1)+16

f(-1)=3+16

\boxed{f(-1)=19}
