The phosphate is removed by hydrolysis from ATP molecules. Thus, energy is stored in the chemical bonds of ATP and released during ATP hydrolysis.

Further Explanation:

ATP is an energy caring molecule present in the living cell.ATP is made of three primary molecule sugar (ribose), a nitrogenous base (Adenine), and three phosphate group. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the molecular currency used for energy transactions. The energy is kept in the bonds between the last phosphate groups. These bonds are hydrolyzed by the enzymes to obtain energy for reactions. It releases energy required for the chemical reaction, and hence, it is known as an effective energy donor.

The primary source of energy is a phosphate tail present in the ATP. Energy is preserved in the phosphate bonds, and when these bonds are broken down, they release energy. This process is known as ATP hydrolysis in this addition of water occurs. When the one phosphate is removed from ATP, it is converted into ADP and releases inorganic phosphate.

ATP is an nucleotide which contains adenine+ribose sugar + three phosphate groups. The three phosphate groups in ATP are linked together by phosphoanhydride bonds. So when energy is needed to be released, hydrolysis happens breaking one phosphoanhydride bond releasing a phosphate group thereby converting ATP to ADP. So The answer is C.
