It was more "simple" back in the 1800's. in the late 1800's coal mining and city construction was rapidly increasing, not to mention the 13th amendment being past preventing free labor unless as a punishment. hope this helps

They was better lighting in the 1900s compared to 1800s. People had better gas systems. THey could get heated easier. It was easier to cook.
