Diuretic are substances that increase the level of water in the body and excrete out through urine.

There are three kinds of diuretics present:

  • Thiazide: They help in treatment of high blood pressure.
  • Loop diuretics: They help in treatment of heart failure.
  • Potassium sparing diuretics: They help in maintain level of potassium.

Effects of diuretics are:

  • Low level of potassium.
  • Low level of sodium.
  • Thirst  
  • Increase level of blood sugar.
  • Diarrhea

Alcohol is an example of diuretic because it makes individual to pee a lot. Alcohol drinking inhibits the release of anti-diuretic hormone which let the kidney to absorb water to the blood stream.

When there is low level of ADH then the kidney produce more urine than usual. Dehydration occurs due to consumption of alcohol because re-absorption of water does not occur.
