<span>In the story “The Minister’s Black Veil,” Hawthorne uses different names for the black veil. The alternate name that he uses most often is piece of c r a p e. Gloomy shade appears only once, mysterious emblem twice, and sable mask doesn't appear at all in the story, whereas piece of c r a p e appears seven times.
I would say that he is selfish. Jerry isn't grateful for that nickel the narrator gave him as he believes it is not enough given that everybody else gave more. He is acting rude and inconsiderate and doesn't think about the fact that the narrator may not have more money.
