The Great Depression also impacted the United Kingdom, which was trying to recover from the damage it had suffered during the First World War. However, the government implemented a series of measures intended to soften the blow. The Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald proposed to raise taxes, cut spending and cut unemployment benefits. Moreover, Britain went off the gold standard in 1931. Finally, the government lowered interest rates in order to stimulate various industries.
