Uncle Bruno was visiting us from Germany. On his first morning with us, we had already cleared the breakfast dishes by the time

he came into the kitchen. So he began searching for something to eat. "There is nothing good in any of these kabinetts!” he complained. Finally, he picked through the bowl of fruit on the kitchen table. "I guess I’ll have an apfel,” he said. Then he leaned back in his chair and put his hand on his forehead. "I think I have a fieber. I’m going back to bed!” "This is going to be a long visit,” my mom whispered to me with a wink.
Which word provides a clue to the meaning of kabinetts? ____

Answer:

1. Which word provides a clue to the meaning of kabinetts?

Searching

2. Which consecutive letters does apfel share with its English cognate?

a, p, e, l

3. Which phrase provides a clue to the meaning of fieber?

forehead

4. What is the English cognate for fieber?

fever

Explanation:

1. Searching shows he was looking for something. He was in the kitchen. When you are looking in the kitchen for something you might want to look in the cabinets.

2. He is looking for food and what food sounds like apfel? The answer is apple. What letters do they have in common? a, p, e, l.

3. Forehead signifies he might be feeling to see if it's warm because he may not be feeling well. Which leads me to the next question.

4. It's fever because, if you look at the explanation for 3 he touched his forehead and after that, he says, "I think I have a fieber. I'm going to bed." This shows he was either tired or sick. Since he touched his forehead, he was probably sick with a fever.

I would say that the correct answer is B, concerned. A doesn't apply, he isn't really preoccupied with something over something else, and C doesnt completely make sense with the passage. And Tom isn't horrified, he doesn't seem to be reacting too much at all, other than just seeming concerned.
