With this quote, George Washington was reflecting his view's on the United States government. He believed the federal government needed more power. He had the firm belief that the country needed a strong federal government if it wanted to keep control of the states. Otherwise, each state could do as they please, sometimes against the federal government regulations. So in order to have a real government that could be the center of important decisions to all the Union, it was needed a strong federal government.
