Among the many symbols of freedom in America, the Statue of Liberty stands above them all. Today, the statue is a unique America

n symbol and one of the most recognizable icons of the United States. Many do not realize, however, that the statue was made in France and was given to America as a gift to honor democracy. French artist Frederic Auguste Bartholdi created the statue that is 151 feet tall—305 feet tall with the pedestal and foundation. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the builder of Paris' Eiffel Tower, engineered the iron framework.
Agreed upon in a joint effort, the French people would be responsible for the statue and its assembly, and the American people would build the base. When the fundraising for the pedestal began to slow in America, publisher Joseph Pulitzer opened up the editorial pages of his newspaper to support the effort. Pulitzer criticized both the rich, who had failed to finance the pedestal construction, and the middle class, who were content to rely upon the wealthy. The statue, he argued, was paid for by the masses of the French people. It was not a gift from the millionaires of France to the millionaires of America. It was a gift from all of France to all of America. On August 11, 1885, less than five months after the drive had been recharged, and two months after the arrival of the statue in America, Pulitzer was able to announce the success of the fundraising campaign. Once there on Ellis Island, the statue stood to greet the many immigrants who came to America.
