1933 was one of the worst years in American history. At this time, America was in the Great Depression. Thanks to overproduction, buying on margin, and the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the US economy crashed during the early 1930's. This resulted in millions of Americans becoming poor or homeless. Due to decreased consumption, businesses closed their doors. This resulted in millions of Americans losing their jobs. This is why the unemployment rate was close to nearly 30% by the time 1933 came around.
