Explanation: Frederick Douglas ( 1818-1895)  was an important fighter for human rights. He was a slave himself. He became an abolitionist and was part of the movement to free slaves. In this excerpt , he is making the reader know in advance -<em>foreshadow</em>-   that he will run away. Although he did not rely too much on the white men's advice, he finally followed it and escaped.
