Assimilation occurs when people abandon their own culture and tradition in order to adopt the tradition and culture of the majority, or of those perceived as higher ranked than them. In Africa, assimilation often occurred during colonization where African people would start behaving like colonists so as to prevent being seen as barbarians or anything similar.
