The defense forces resisted the Japanese forces on Baatan for a full three months, until the final fall of Baatan on April 9, 1942. Truman wanted to make Japan give up on fighting, and according to him this was the only way. Truly, just a couple of weeks after the bombs were dropped Japan capitulated.
