Answer:  even though Jesus Christ was a revolutionary and his message continues being revolutionary, Catholic church became a conservative and power ridden institution. It was quite natural that Catholic church and papacy defended monarchic order.

Explanation: even during the next, i.e. 19th century Catholic had a big problem to keep up with rapid changes that were taking place in Europe ...idea of human rights, constitutionalism, right to vote, rise of socialism and nationalism, Darwinism, birth of psychology and its explanations of psychic life without referrence to God ....all that was very difficult for church to swallow and accept. All these changes were to fast. Reactions of papacy were usually defensive and fearful. Church usually allied with conservative politics.
