Althought he was elegible to run for election President Truman decided not to run for reelection in March 1952 to avoid defeat as he approval rating plummeted.  In that year's general election, the government of Illinois, Democrat Adlai Stevenson ackowledged defeat by Republican Dwight Eisenhower.
