The world wars were on a much larger scale than many wars in history. The first world war was devastating because of its massive scale of how many countries participated.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Democratic president that led the US to victory in the Second World War, won four consecutive terms as president. He served 3 full terms and died in the beginning of his fourth term. After the death of FDR, a limit of two consecutive terms was fixed for Americans presidents when Congress passed the 22nd Amendment.

The Cold War was caused by the military expansionism of Stalin and his successors. The American response… was basically a defensive reaction. As long as Soviet leaders clung to their dream of imposing Communism on the world, the West had no way (other than surrender) of ending the conflict.
