In the beginning of the book, it's mentioned that had abandoned the ‘true way’, From this we can infer that he was morally lost in his real life.

The situation brought Dante to Hell, where he started his so-called journey to different levels of hell. As he got deeper to the bottom, the punishment become much more cruel and the place also reserved depending on the severity of the prisoners' sins.
