Answer:

The purpose of the last line of the poem is to provide a bitter irony (option A).

Explanation:

The excerpt in the picture was taken from the poem "Richard Cory", by Edwin Arlington Robinson. The poem was written while the American people were still suffering due to the depression of 1893. The speaker in the poem is poor, lives waiting for the light, without meat, eating stale bread. He and others just like him wish to be Richard Cory, a wealthy and elegant man. As the last line reveals, however, being rich is not sufficient for Cory to be happy. While the poor keep on living, working, and struggling, Richard Cory ironically kills himself, even though he has a seemingly perfect life.

The poem "Richard Cory" was adapted into a song by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon & Garfunkel.

How might you rewrite sentences 3 and 4 as one sentence containing an appositive<br> phrase?
bija089 [108]

Answer:

The state music contest, a competition that happens once a year, had arrived.

Explanation:

I have been able to rewrite sentences 3 and 4 as one sentence containing an appositive phrase.

An appositive phrase refers to a noun or a noun phrase that actually renames the noun next to it. The appositive phrase goes ahead to explain and give more meaning to the noun next to it.

In the above sentence, "<em>a competition that happens once a year</em>" is the appositive phrase that explains or renames "<em>The state music contest</em>".

The purpose it actually serves is to give more information about the noun.

You can't say anything meaningful about the mystery of personality unless you put that personality in a believable and significant social context.

<h3>O'Connor's Idea about Characterization</h3>

In the "<em>Purple Elephant Theory of Literature"</em> for instance, O'Connor strives to show that people are like purple elephants...that is unique. Because, humans are social in nature, the social context of a character is very critical.
