Explanation:

Dante wrote the Divine Comedy while in exile and some of his resentment can be felt from its pages. At a time when church and politics disputed power, religious and political leaders interfered in people's lives, and Dante's was no exception to that fact. In his Inferno, he depicts some of his political enemies when using imagery to make it all more vivid for readers to imagine. Dante also places in hell the Pope. That was most likely the way he found to express his discontentment with the political/religious situation of his time.
